A short shank and an inturned point catch the lip as soon as the fish tries to eject the bait, so the hook works on its own — no strike is needed. With a hair rig the bait sits beside the hook rather than on it, so the hook stays clear and sets reliably. Strong wire is essential, as a carp fights long.
